Hyderabad: Trees uprooted, power supply disrupted

The strong winds prompted a fire at Bukkapuram village in Jadwel district.

Hyderabad: Heavy rain coupled with thunder, lightning and gusty winds, hit Telangana on Thursday, killing six persons, including a 7-year-old from the city. Thunderstorms pounded Hyderabad, and an iron shelter of the Hyderabad traffic police at Musheerabad collapsed under the strength of the winds. A compound wall at Aramghar also collapsed. The strong winds prompted a fire at Bukkapuram village in Jadwel district.

Mr V. Kapil said, “It was a site of devastation at the RTA office - Khairatabad, the sky turned dark and loud peals of thunder was witnessed. Winds played havoc, large chunks of wood from fallen trees were scattered on the main carriageway. The wind ripped apart a majority of hoardings within the city limits.” People took to social media, advising friends and family to stay indoors. Mr G. Shankar from Kondapur said there was a dust storm before the rain.

Several trees were uprooted and were obstructing traffic. Many localities witnessed power trips, in a few areas power was restored in the evening. Inundation was reported at traffic junctions. The storm that hit the city on Wednesday, picked up at the same time on Thursday. The coming two days would witness similar weather conditions.

The capital is likely to witness a partly cloudy sky in the morning hours, becoming generally cloudy towards the evening or night with the possibility of rain or thundershowers accompanied with squall or hail. The temperatures for day and night are expected to be around 39° and 22° respectively.
