Telangana: Jobs still a far cry for disabled

The governent has decided to take up a periodic review to assess the implementation of reservations.

Hyderabad: The Telangana state government will introduce stringent norms for implementation of the three per cent quota for the physically challenged in education and employment.

Though the quota exists, it is not being fully implemented. The governent has decided to take up a periodic review to assess the implementation of reservations.

Nizamabad MP K. Kavitha along with representatives of various associations of the physically challenged met the minister for physically challenged, Tummala Nageshwar Rao, at the Secretariat on Wednesday. They brought to the notice of the minister the failure of the government in ensuring full implementation of the quota.

They pointed out that the officials were denying them admission in colleges and government jobs under one pretext or the other. Also obtaining disability certificates from the departments had become cumbersome and they could not avail reservations. They also informed that officials were not giving them adequate time to re-submit certificates and were offering the seats to other reserved categories on grounds that they were not enough physically challenged candidates.

They pleaded that the government stop offering PHC quota to others. In case of non-filling of seats/posts, backlog vacancies should be carried forward to the next year.

Minister Tummala said, “We will write to the education department and government recruitment agencies to strictly implement the three per cent quota. We will take up a periodic review to assess how they are being implemented. Officials found ignoring the three per cent quota, will face stringent action.”
