Bengaluru: Cops at traffic offenders' doorsteps
BENGALURU: If you are a habitual traffic rule violator, but never got caught on the spot, then be prepared to have traffic policemen as your guests at home.
With many traffic rule violators not paying the fine despite getting a notice, the Bangalore Traffic Police (BTP) are now visiting their homes to collect the fine.
The BTP officials started this initiative this year after several other measures proved unsuccessful.
They had earlier tried naming and shaming the offenders, but in vain. On its website and social media platform the BTP had named and shamed 500 vehicle owners, involved in 22,376 cases of traffic rule violations, but the move did not fetch the desired results.
“Starting from January 2017, we are tracking down the repeated offenders, visiting them at their registered address and making them pay up,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) R. Hitendra said.
A senior police officer said that most offenders are paying fines to avoid confiscation of their vehicles. “This move seems to be working,” he said.
In 2016, as many as 91 lakh violations were recorded in the city and this year the number is expected to be even more. The number of violations till March 2017 stood at 26 lakh.
