Crackdown on hawala
Hyderabad: Different wings of the police seized Rs 1.89 crore of hawala money in the city in separate instances on Wednesday.
The Abdullapurmet police seized Rs 52 lakh in different instances during vehicle checking organised in connection with the elections.
Around 4 pm, the Special Operations Team along with the flying squad and the Abdullapurmet police found Rs 48 lakh in a car (AP28 DS 3456) opposite Ramoji Film City. Driver K. Satyapal Reddy, 32, of Gachibowli, was employ-ed by one Srinivas Reddy, owner of Vivekananda Institute of Technology at Batasingaram, and did not have receipts. The police found that the car had 16 traffic challans for Rs 11,760.
At the Kothaguda Crossroads, about Rs 4,23,830 was found in possession of one K. Srinivas Rao, 53, who runs a brick kiln. He did not have documents.
In simultaneous raids, the Commissioner’s Task Force, North Zone, busted two hawala rackets, and seized Rs 41 lakh.
DCP, Task Force, P. Radhakishan Rao said six persons were arrested and Rs 26 lakh hawala cash seized on Goshamahal road.
The arrested were hawala operators Abhishek Rathi and Kamal Sharma, agents Subhash Sharma and Shyam Sundar and customers Mahesh Kumar Pande and Veerabommala Srisailam.
At Ramgopalpet, the police arrested hawala operator Shravan Singh Rajput and customer Tammineedi Venkateswar Rao and seized Rs 15 lakh.
A static surveillance team and Sultan Bazaar police nabbed five persons in three different cases and seized around Rs 22 lakh.
In the first case, Rs 10.53 lakh hawala money was seized when it is about to be exchanged at Ramkoti crossroads, ACP P. Devender said. The SST team nabbed two accused.
Sultan Bazaar inspector K. Subbarami Reddy said Rs 8.09 lakh of hawala money was seized at Royal crossroads on Tuesday evening. Manghi Lal Sharma and Vinod Singh Sultan Bazaar were arrested.
In a third case, Mohammed Imran, 27, a salesman at Tanvir Suits and Saris, Falaknuma, was arrested and Rs 3.50 lakh that he said was to be deposited in a bank was seized as he did not have documents.
