Red-faced CPI forces Wayanad secretary Vijayan Cherukara to quit

The state leadership's stand made Cherukara's position untenable.

Thiruvananthapuram: After the huge embarrassment caused by the land deal caught on camera, CPI Wayanad district secretary Vijayan Cherukara was on Tuesday forced to quit. Though the CPI tried to put up a brave face saying that Cherukara offered to relinquish his position, at the district council meeting he came under sharp criticism from members. Many demanded his resignation.

In view of the sharp criticism, Cherukara said he would not like to create further crisis in the party by continuing in the post. The state leadership had earlier taken a tough position on the issue which had brought bad name to the party. The state leadership’s stand made Cherukara's position untenable. The council took the decision to keep him out of secretaryship for two months and also decided to conduct an inquiry into the entire episode.

Ollur MLA K Rajan who is also CPI national council member, has been given the charge of acting secretary of Wayanad. He is currently in charge of the district. CPI state assistant secretary Sathyan Mokeri welcomed the vigilance probe into the issue. He said the members had expressed concern over the allegations and felt the party leaders should come clean on the charges.
