Mahatma Gandhi University makes giant leap in NIRF

The IISER has also made a remarkable jump overall from 117th rank to 58th rank.

KOCHI: In the second overall ranking and third sector-wise ranking of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) introduced by the Union ministry of human resources development, MG University has made a remarkable stride to the 52nd position this year overall, taking a huge leap from last year’s 124th rank. The IISER has also made a remarkable jump overall from 117th rank to 58th rank.

Kerala University is remaining static at last year’s 47th position while Cochin University of Science and Technology has moved up from 106th rank overall last year to 99th this year. Calicut University has gone down to 105th position overall from last year's 93rd rank. Perhaps throwing light on the way in which the list was prepared, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology,

Thiruvananthapuram, does not find a place in the first 200 institutions overall while it is ranked 23rd among engineering institutions this year. Last year it had an overall rank of 56 and among engineering institutions, the 28th position. Last year Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode was at 85th position overall, but it has failed to find a place in first 200 overall this year.

Among management institutions, IIM Kozhikode is at 6th place nationally, one position down from last year’s 5th position. Kerala University, MG University, IISER and Cusat are the institutions to figure in the first 100 ranks overall in NIRF this year. In the 100-150 band of ranks overall, Calicut University alone figures while in the 150-200 band, Central University of Kerala, Kasaragod, alone figures. Last year, the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University was at the 172nd position, but it does not figure in the first 200 ranks in the overall category this year.

Overall the top ten institutions this year in the order are Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Anna University, Chennai. In the university category this year, the first top ten in the order are IISc Bangalore, JNU, BHU, Anna University, University of Hyderabad, Jadavpur University, University of Delhi, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, Savitribai Phule Pune University and Aligarh Muslim University.

Kerala University has a rank of 30 (last year 29th rank), MGU has 34th (last year 67th rank) Cusat at 69th (last year 86th rank), and Calicut is at 73rd (last year 57) to figure in the first 100 ranks in the university category. No college from Kerala figures in the top 10 colleges in the country while University College, Thiruvananthapuram, tops from the state at 18th rank.

The next is St Joseph’s College, Calicut, at 34th rank, followed by Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram, at 36th rank, Sacred Heart College, Ernakulam, at 41st rank, Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Ernakulam, at 43rd rank, TKM College of Arts and Science, Kollam at 45th rank, SB College, Changanassery, at 46th rank, Christ College, Irinjalakuda at 63rd rank, KG College Kottayam at 69th rank, St Teresa’s College, Ernakulam at 76th rank, Vimala College, Thrissur at 77th rank, St Thomas College, Thrissur, at 79th rank, Marian College, Kuttikkanam, at 84th rank, Nirmalagiri College at Kannur at 87th rank, MG College, Thiruvananthapuram, at 88th rank, Bishop Moore College, Alappuzha, 92nd rank and St Joseph’s College, Thrissur, 97th rank, to figure in the first 100 ranks nationwide.
