Hyderabad HC seeks report on illegal abortions
Hyderabad: Expressing concern at the illegal methods used to conduct abortions by a private nursing home in the city, the Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday directed the Principal Secretaries of Health and Family Welfare, Home department, DGP, City Police Commissioner and Hyderabad District Medical and Health Officer to enquire into the allegations of the petitioner and submit an action-taken report before it.
A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice K Vijaya Lakshmi was dealing with a PIL by R Sandeep Yadav a resident of Amberpet alleging horrific female foeticide in Gayatri Nursing Home in Singareni Colony at Saidabad of the city.
Mr. S R Sanku, counsel for the petitioner, complained to the court that the management of the nursing home had allowed a woman who was working as a supervisor, to perform illegal abortions recklessly and also contrary to the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act 1994 and also in violation of medical ethics framed by the Medical Council of India.
The counsel told the court that when the petitioner tried to expose the illegal abortions done by the nursing home, the management lodged a criminal case against him.
He submitted that they had furnished video clippings and photos of illegal abortions being carried out in the nursing home along with the affidavit.
While asking the authorities to take serious view on the illegal and gruesome abortions, the bench directed respondent authorities to examine the video clippings and photos furnished by the petitioner and enquire into the matter and submit a report before it within a week.
