Bengaluru shines in HRD ratings
New Delhi: Bengaluru’s Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Delhi’s Miranda House are India’s best university and college, a countrywide government ranking of educational institutions said on Monday. The annual national rankings released by the Union HRD ministry, is a double cause for celebration for the IT capital, as it also ranked Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bengaluru at number 4. Jadavpur university is at number 5.
Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University – which was at the centre of a storm on nationalism last year – was ranked second among universities while Banaras Hindu University secured third position. Seven IITs were among the top 10 in the overall ranking category.
Loyola College in Chennai and Shri Ram College were the second and third-best colleges in India, said the survey of “general degree” colleges by the HRD ministry. This is the first time colleges have been ranked. The results of the second edition of the domestic ranking were announced by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar who also said that the institutions which fared well in the rankings will be provided with more funding, enhanced autonomy and other benefits.
