Amit Shah wants police to make best use of technology to increase conviction rates

BENGALURU: Stating that the policing of the country would be the best in the world by 2047 when the country celebrates its 100th year of Independence, the Union Minister for Home and Cooperation Amit Shah asked the police officials to make best use of technology to increase the conviction rates and to control crime rates.

Speaking after launching ‘Safe City’ project an initiative of the Union Government under the Nirbhaya Scheme in association with the State Government, Shah on Friday said that the project was the brainchild of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and wanted police officials to make better use of the technology and get equipped with the technology.

"Train police personnel with technological usage in an effective manner with a holistic and comprehensive approach," Shah said, adding that Police Technology Mission has started its work in the country.

Regarding the ‘Safe City’ project, Shah said the project is a result of ‘Make in India’ having indigenous technology without being dependent on foreign support. "Having the best technology which is indigenous made, gives an idea about the pace in which the country is moving ahead," the Minister said.

Shah said, the ‘Safe City’ project was being launched in 8 cities of the country on a trial basis including Bengaluru and the Centre has decided to spend around Rs 2,500 crore for it.

In the first phase of the project, Rs 666 crore were spent and 4,100 cameras have been installed and 8 drones are made available and 96 viewing centres and command centres in Bengaluru.

“After inspection of the command centre, I have not no doubt that a modern command centre is one among the best,” he said, adding that 30 security islands have been established where victims can press a panic button upon which personnel sitting in control rooms will be alerted and will assist the victim in need of help and the Police Control Room (PCR) van will reach the victim in a few minutes.

At the function, Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, DGP Praveen Sood and others were present.
