Hyderabad: New breathalyser straws for all tests

The test is used to measure alcohol level in the blood and prevent drivers with amounts of alcohol above the recommended amount, from driving.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad traffic police has said it will ensure that a fresh, new straw will be used after each breathalyser test. The test is used to measure alcohol level in the blood and prevent drivers with amounts of alcohol above the recommended amount, from driving.

The affirmation comes in the wake of questions being raised since Monday, after the first Covid-19 case was confirmed in the city, about the safety of people asked to use breathalysers during the checks. In the last week of February, the city’s North Zone police — under whose jurisdiction Mahendra Hills, the area in which the Covid-19 patient resides — has seen 18 drunk driver checks under the four police stations in the zone.

According to R. Rangaiah, the North Zone additional commissioner of police, the checks were held at Addagutta, Balamrai, and Tirumalagiri under the Maredpally, Gopalapuram, Mahankali and Tirumalagiri police stations.
