Chairman of Shaheen group gets anticipatory bail in sedition case

Abdul Qadeer had been on the run since a play staged by the school was accused of being derogatory to Narendra Modi

Bidar: A local court on Tuesday gave anticipatory bail to Abdul Qadeer, chairman of the Shaheen Group of Institutions, Bidar, and four other members of the staff of the management in a sedition case filed against them for staging a play that was alleged to be derogatory to prime minister Narendra Modi.

The principal and district sessions court asked them to furnish a bond for Rs 2 lakh and three solvent sureties and be present before the investigating officer in a week’s time. Besides, they have been asked to apply for regular bail within a month.

Along with Abdul Qadeer, Shaheen group staff members Allauddin, Abdul Khaleq, Bila Inamdar and Mahtab were charged with sedition on January 26 this year after students of the Shaheen Primary School enacted a play that was critical of the Citizenship Amendment Act brought in by the central government. Video clips of the play went viral on social media.

A busybody of Bidar, Neeleesh Jadhav lodged a complaint against the Shaheen Group alleging that the play portrayed Narendra Modi in a bad light. Abdul Qadeer and the four staffers of the management went into hiding but headmistress Fareeda Begum and Najeebunniss, parent of a child who played a role in the play, were arrested and later on released on bail.
