Bengaluru: Transformers on footpaths to be shifted in 6 months

A few years back, a youth got electrocuted when he came in contact with a transformer in Church Street.

Bengaluru: The Bescom is speeding up the work of shifting transformers located on footpaths. They have already shifted and redesigned 2,224 transformers and now 1,695 are left.

The transformers located on footpaths were posing a hazard to the pedestrians, as they could come in contact with a live wire or parts of transformers and risk electrocution.

A few years back, a youth got electrocuted when he came in contact with a transformer in Church Street. His parents had approached the High Court, which had directed Bescom to shift all the transformers located on footpaths.

A senior officer from Bescom said, "Actually, the deadline was March 2019, but due to various challenges, we were unable to keep it. But we assure you that in six month's time, we will be completing the entire work. The challenges include finding the right space to shift the transformer and redesigning the transformer to fit into that space."

"All this takes time and we have been doing it. Another important factor is that the transformers are located 3 metres above the ground, now we have to put it up at 11 metre and it is difficult task. The work has picked up pace now and we are sure of finishing it in six months," he added.
