It's open house on Gandhi Bazaar, ideas welcome!

The idea of the exhibition was to get inputs from the people and share them with local government bodies.

Bengaluru: One of the oldest and most vibrant markets in the city, Gandhi Bazaar, is facing a threat from heavy traffic, poor public space and encroachment by vendors, shops and vehicles.

It now needs to be re-imagined as a public and cultural space. Helping the state government in this endeavour is the Indo-German bilateral project, Sustainable Supply of Perishables into Cities - Green Logistics Project (GLP), with support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit.

An open house, 'Namma Gandhi Bazaar', was organised on Saturday at Tagore Park in Basavanagudi with the objective of improving the supply of fresh fruits and vegetables into urban areas with the participation of local residents and street vendors along with the involvement of various government agencies on the design aspect. The idea of the exhibition was to get inputs from the people and share them with local government bodies.

Vijay Narnapatti, Director & Design Principal of Mayapraxis, said, "A special design has been presented and people have to take a decision on what they want."

The exhibition displayed a spatial design of three scenarios, suggested by various stakeholders, including shoppers, shopkeepers, residents, vendors, and government agencies like the BBMP, BWSSB, Bescom and traffic police.

Dr N.M. Chandrashekar, a resident of Gandhi Bazaar, said, "First of all, they should implement this proposal. The basic problem with our area is that there is no space for pedestrians to walk. I don't understand whether the footpath is for vendors or for pedestrians.
