Hyderabad: Th sand mafia in Yadadri Bhongir district took the life of a farmer who had complained to government officials about illegal mining of sand. The Valigonda police of Rachakonda commissionerate on Monday arrested two persons who murdered the farmer, D. Pandu, 45, of Lingarajupally.

On January 30, Pandu was found with grievous injuries on the roadside on the village outskirts. Locals who noticed him informed the police who rushed him to Gandhi Hospital. He died while undergoing treatment the same night.

The Valigonda police registered a case and arrested B. Ravinder, 32, a lorry driver and N. Naresh, 33, a tractor driver from the same village.

During the investigation, the police found that Ravinder and Naresh were transporting sand from the banks of the Musi river on behalf of a villager who had taken permission from the revenue department officials.

After transporting the permitted load of sand, Ravinder and Naresh tried to take out more sand from the river illegally. Pandu, who learned of this, complained to the officials, who stopped the attempt and warned off the duo.

“For the last one year, the sand transposition in the village had stopped as Pandu and a few other locals were complaining about the illegalities. Keeping in mind the incident, the accused attacked Pandu with sticks,” said Choutuppal assistant commissioner of police P. Sathaiah.
