Congress will have smooth seat-sharing process with JD(S): Dinesh Gundurao

Both parties are equally strong in some constituencies in districts like Mandya, Hassan, Mysuru and Chikkaballapur.

Mangaluru: Keeping in mind the larger aim of defeating the BJP in the coming Parliament elections, the Congress has decided to have a smooth seat sharing process with its coalition partner, Janata Dal (Secular) in Karnataka without being 'adamant.' This was made clear by Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president Dinesh Gundurao on Sunday.

Both parties are equally strong in some constituencies in districts like Mandya, Hassan, Mysuru and Chikkaballapur. Party workers and local leaders of both parties are therefore demanding their respective candidate in several places and all eyes are on JD(S) and Congress top leaders on how they decide on seat sharing in these places.

In what seems to be an attempt to clear the air, Mr Gundurao said, “We have not yet held any discussion to finalise seat sharing. Local leaders might have put forth their demands and suggestions. But the final decision will be taken by the Congress High Command and JD(S) top leaders,” he told reporters during his visit to Mangaluru on Sunday.

“The yardstick for selection will be the candidate and the winnability of the party. The Congress is not adamant (on claiming any seat). For example in the recent Shivamogga Lok Sabha byelection, we backed Madhu Bangarappa when his name was proposed by the JD(S) as he was a good candidate though we have a good base in the constituency,” he said. “Our aim is to get maximum seats for the Congress-JD(S) and defeat the BJP. We will work on this strategy. Some leaders might have placed their suggestions. We will look into their suggestions and take a decision," Mr Gundurao said.
