Assault video: 71 Kumaraswamy Layout policemen transferred

This is first time that such a large number of police personnel have been shunted out in one go.

Bengaluru: Days after a video of Kumaraswamy Layout ASI Renukaiah assaulting a woman complainant inside and outside the police station went viral, leading to his suspension, city Police Commissioner T. Suneel Kumar has transferred 71 police personnel of the station to make it a people-friendly station.

This is first time that such a large number of police personnel have been shunted out in one go. The station which had 78 police personnel in all now has 71 new police officials. The transfer order was issued by the police commissioner on recommendation from DCP (South) Annamalai, who had launched a probe following the assault last month.

The ASI who assaulted the woman was already suspended along with two other policemen, including the one who shot the video of Renukaiah assaulting the woman and making it viral.

DCP Annamalai, however, clarified that the transfer was an image-cleansing exercise and should not be seen as a punishment transfer.

“Except three sub-inspectors and the inspector who recently took charge of the station, 71 police personnel were transferred. This is to ensure our stations have a new culture and adopt people-friendly measures,” Annamalai said.

On January 20, the ASI in question had assaulted a woman who had gone to the station to resolve a domestic row. The entire incident was recorded by a policeman on his mobile phone and the video went viral on social media platforms. ASI Renukaiah was suspended immediately after the video went viral.
