India regrets stripping incident; Tanzania angry

Other African countries are also reportedly outraged over the matter.

New Delh/Bengaluru: In what has caused acute embarrassment to New Delhi, the Indian Government on Wednesday evening expressed its “deep pain” and “regret” to Tanzania over a “shameful” incident in Bengaluru where a mob reportedly attacked and stripped a Tanzanian woman in the Karnataka capital on Sunday night — after a furious Tanzania issued a ‘note verbale’ to India about the reported attacks on African students in Bengaluru.

Other African countries are also reportedly outraged over the matter. With External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj reacting immediately, the Union Government said it had taken up the matter with the Karnataka government.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Police on Wednesday picked up the five Tanzanian students from their homes and took them to Peenya police station, where they recorded their statements before taking them to Sapthagiri Hospital for medical examination.
