Bengaluru: Palike mops up Rs 2,159 crore tax
Bengaluru: The BBMP is all set to make a record collection of property tax this financial year, mopping up Rs 2,159 crore already as against the target of 3,100 crore for 2018-19.
Revealing this here on Thursday, Mayor Gangambike said with another three months to go for the end of the financial year, the civic body was expected to mop up another Rs 500 crore, making it the highest collection in recent years.
Besides the “naming and shaming” tool used to force defaulters to pay up, the BBMP was this time planning to seize properties of the defaulters to make them fall in line, she warned.Ms Gangambike explained that the BBMP's revenue officials had been set weekly targets and told to make a list of the top 50 defaulters in each zone and also use all their powers to improve tax collection. The tactic appeared to have worked as the BBMP had collected Rs 2,159 crore in property tax as on December 25, she said.
On the other hand, the total property tax collected in 2017-18 was Rs 2,177.83 crore as against the target of Rs 2,600 crore.
Pointing out that people usually paid their property tax towards the end of the financial year, she said the BBMP's officials had been given both targets and a free hand to make sure they did.
