Hyderabad: 230 structures to be razed to widen road
Hyderabad: After the Balanagar flyover, it is the elevated corridor from Uppal to Ghatkesar that is in the midst of a controversy.
The GHMC has decided to revise road widening proposals to 200 ft from 150 and would raze to the ground at least 230 roadside properties. Merchants and residents want the corporation to change the proposals and protect the livelihood of about 2,000 families.
The corporation would take up the demolition drive from Uppal Ring Road to Nalla Cheruvu. However, a corporation official claimed that the demolition drive would start in February.
The Uppal elevated corridor would be from Uppal to Nandanavanam Bhagy-anagar covering 6.4 km and would be built at an estimated cost of '960 crore. The ministry for road transport had given green signal to the project.
Of the Rs 960 crore, about Rs 330 crore had been earmarked for land acquisition and the rest for construction. The state has asked the corporation to chalk out plans for road widening for a six-lane elevated corridor instead of four-lane.
Uppal merchants association and Uppal main road building owners association claimed that due to road widening in 1997, several shops had been brought down and people were just recovering from its impact. Its members wanted the government to revise the proposals and protect their livelihood.
About the 200-ft widening plan, GHMC officials said 225 properties would be affected and consent from five property owners had been received.
The corporation would first issue notices and get the consent of the property owner prior to demolition. He added that corporation would complete the land and property acquisition by January.
