MANGALURU: The embers refuse to ebb in this communally sensitive coastal district with the daylight murder of Deepak Rao, a Sangh Parivar activist, stoking more tension in the region on Wednesday.

Police said the victim, employed as an executive at a mobile SIM outlet, succumbed to injuries after he was waylaid and attacked with lethal weapons by four assailants at Mudaikodi-Katipalla, about 20 km from this coastal city. The assailants were later nabbed after a hot pursuit by police officers who also fired at their car near Mijar village. They have been identified as Naushad, Rizwan, Nawaz and Nirshan.

In the aftermath of Deepak Rao's murder, security has been stepped up, and prohibitory orders imposed for 24 hours from 10 PM on Wednesday.
Sharan Pumpwell, convener of the state unit of Bajrang Dal, who blamed PFI for the fatal attack, demanded that the state government ban the outfit.
