Nobel Laureate Ada E Yonath calls for degradable antibiotics
TIRUPATI: Contrasting the current preference of broad range of anti-biotics, Nobel Laureate Ada E Yonath has called for designing the pathogen specific drugs to combat the antibiotic resistance. Speaking at the Indian Science Congress here on Tuesday, she said in the light of new studies she is optimistic about solving the issue of antibiotic resistance.
“Almost all antibiotics are not degradable. Even after going out of our body also they are not degradable. The remaining tiniest part of the antibiotics can be found in the soil, water and grass,” she said. “We have identified some novel antibiotic sites on the subunits of ribosomes. The new insights obtained from high-resolution structures provide unique tools for the design of pathogen-specific antibiotics,” the Nobel Laureate added.
