Congress to protest against Modi

A meeting of party functionaries would be held on January 7 to chalk out the future course of protests against demonetisation, Thirunavukkarasu said.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu unit of Congress is gearing up for a protest on January 5 against the anti-people measures of the Centre including demonetisation of high-value currencies, TNCC chief S. Thirunavukkarasar said on Tuesday.

The Congress leader said he would lead the protest in the city to be attended by former Union minister K. Rahman Khan and Assembly floor leader K.R. Ramasamy. There is not a single person in the country who is not affected by the demonetisation of high-value notes by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said. He cited the announcement of party's national vice-president Rahul Gandhi while saying the protests would be held throughout the state.

A meeting of party functionaries would be held on January 7 to chalk out the future course of protests against demonetisation, Thirunavukkarasu said. He revealed that he would be presiding over the meeting to be attended by K. Rahman Khan, national general secretary Mukul Wasnik, former Union minister Oscar Fernandes and national secretary G. Chinna Reddy.

He said it is not known if the RBI gave its approval for the Prime Minister's announcement and asked why evidence for RBI approval is not released. "From November 8 to December 30, how much money was deposited in banks? What is the share of black money in the total deposits? Why the details have not been released," he asked.

He alleged that the Prime Minister is announcing concessions that should have been given in the Union budget only to divert attention from the failure of demonetisation. The Prime Minister could not hide his failure since Congress is gearing up to expose his failure, Mr Thirunavukkarasu said, and appealed to party men to gather in large numbers for the protest.
