Malappuram: In what is suspected to be a continuation of the political clash between the CPM and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in the coastal region of Tirur, a clash erupted during a Meeladu Nabi procession at Unniyal near Tirur on Saturday. Six persons were injured during the clash between AP and EK factions of Sunnis who are backed by the CPM and IUML respectively. According to the police, a group of alleged CPM activists unleashed an attack on some of the people who were part of the Meelad procession, organised by Misbahul Huda Madrasa around 10 am, alleging that the accused of recent political clashes were taking part in the procession.

The Madrasa belongs to the EK Sunni faction supported by IUML. All the six injured are IUML activists. They have been admitted to various hospitals while the seriously injured are in Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode. The police has deployed more forces in Unniyal due to the tension which prevails in the area. Tanur Police said that no arrests had been made and the investigation was on.

Clashes between both the parties have been recurring in the area for the past two years. The police have stepped in to thwart further escalation of hostilities in the area which may ignite into another political clash. Meanwhile, the Indian Union Muslim League has called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Vettam and Niramaruthur panchayats in protest against the attack on its workers.
