Telangana government asks pensioners to open bank accounts for cash
Hyderabad: Pensions have been delayed due to the ongoing currency crisis and pensioners have been asked to open bank accounts for transfer of the money.
The state government pays a monthly pension of Rs 1,000 to aged widows, weavers, toddy tappers, beedi workers, and artisans and Rs 1,500 to the disabled.
With the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes no longer being legal tender, the government is unable to disburse Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500 in cash as there is a shortage of the new notes.
There are 35,95,781 pensioners — 13,41,680 old age pensioners, 4,57,087 disabled, 13,26,049 widows, 34,179 weavers, 57,349 toddy tappers, 3,48,763 beedi workers and 30,674 artisans.
“My mother received her pension, but got a Rs 2,000 note. She was requested to share Rs 1000 with another pensioner,” said Mr Srinivas, a cab driver.
In Jharasangam mandal, Medak district, pensioners were told the money will be credited to their accounts.
