Police, BBMP to smoothen traffic flow
Bengaluru: With Bengaluru having one of the slowest moving traffic in the country, the newly appointed Additional Commissioner (Traffic), Harishekaran, has called for greater cooperation with BBMP to ensure a smoother traffic flow.
A recent study by cab aggregator Ola had stated that the average speed in Bengaluru city (15.5 km per hour) was the third slowest among the 20 cities surveyed, only behind Patna and Kolkata.
The traffic police commissioner held a meeting in which senior officers of BBMP were also present.
A traffic police inspector, who attended the meeting, said most often traffic congestion was caused due to road works and roadside parking.
“In the meeting Harishekaran asked BBMP officers to provide the contact details of the ward level officials and told them to get in touch with jurisdictional traffic police officials before carrying out any road work, so that the police can plan traffic diversions in advance to ensure that the motorists do not get stuck due to congestion,” the inspector said.
The inspector also mentioned that the police would provide a list of roads prone to water logging, choked drains to the BBMP officials to act upon. They would also provide details regarding potholes, pavement encroachments and damaged road medians.
The BBMP officers who attended the meeting appreciated the efforts by police and have informed Mayor to take part in the next meeting.
“We have asked suggestions from the traffic police department on how and when to carry out any work related to roads so that there will be no traffic congestions. We will meet the traffic personnel on monthly basis,” the officials added.
