The police recovered ornaments worth Rs 5 lakh from the accused.

Bengaluru: The Koramangala police have arrested a domestic help for stealing gold ornaments and replacing them with fake ones. The police recovered ornaments worth Rs 5 lakh from the accused. The accused has been identified as Shanti Ravi, a resident of Shivajinagar. The police said she was earlier booked in two theft cases in Pulikeshinagar and Shivajinagar police stations for the same offence. After she came out on bail she had started working as a domestic help in Koramangala. According to the police, the victim, Devika, a software developer with a private firm and a resident of Koramangala III stage, had filed a complaint with police.

In her complaint she stated that she did not realise that the gold chain she was wearing was fake, until her friend pointed it out during Varamahalakshmi festival. She later came home and checked other chains, which also turned out to be duplicate ones.

Based on her complaint, the police summoned Shanti who initially denied, but later the police found out that she was earlier booked in two theft cases. She used to go to houses under the pretext of asking for jobs as domestic help and used to steal valuables.

After a thorough interrogation, she confessed to the crime. She reportedly told police that she did this to lead a lavish life. She had stolen three gold chains from her employer and replaced them with fake ones with identical patterns. The Koramangala police have registered a case.
