Kerala may foot mishap victims' bill for 48 hours
Thiruvananthapuram: The state government on Thursday proposed a comprehensive trauma care policy to provide free treatment to road accident victims for the first 48 hours.
The cost involved in all emergency surgeries, life-saving procedures and treatment within 48 hours would be borne by the government. In the case of private hospitals also, the government will bear the treatment cost for the initial period from the Road Safety Fund.
The proposal comes in the wake of the tragic death of a Tamil Nadu native, Murugan, who was denied treatment in seven hospitals, including Trivandurm Medical College, after he met with an accident. The amount paid by the government for the treatment in the initial phase would be later recovered from the insurance companies. A detailed insurance scheme will be worked out after a meeting of the chief minister and representatives of insurance companies.
The proposal was discussed at a high-level meeting presided over by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vjayan in the presence of health minister K.K. Shailaja and senior officers.
