Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs G. Kishan Reddy and Adilabad MP Soyam Babu Rao set off on a 150 km Gandhi Sankalp Yatra on Wednesday, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Under this initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP MPs have to march on foot for 150 km, reaching out to the people of their constituencies and imparting the principles of the Father of the Nation.

Minister Reddy garlanded the statue at Bapu Ghat in Secunderabad before starting off on his long march from Ganesh Chowk, Khairtabad in Hyderabad.

"We aspire to build a new India. All should follow the path of shanti and tolerance and ensure that Bapu's ideals are reflected in our actions. Under PM Modi's Gandhi Sankalp Yatra initiative, the BJP wants to propagate Mahatma Gandhi's ideology, principles of non-violence, swaraj and simplicity among the people of the country," Mr Reddy said.

A senior leader said minister Piyush Goyal will be "shouldering the responsibility of keeping an eye on the Telangana BJP MPs' Gandhi Sankalp Yatra."

He said such programmes "keep the cadre on their toes" and make the party stronger in urban and rural areas.

Adilabad MP Soyam Bapurao told Deccan Chronicle, "I will march 150 km in my constituency to bring awareness about Mahatma Gandhi. BJP is carrying out this programme all over the country."
