China to help nab Ulfa chief
Guwahati: In what may be a major breakthrough to cull the insurgency front in Northeast, China has agreed to cooperate with India in identifying and apprehending elusive Ulfa (I) chief, Paresh Baruah, and other insurgent leaders, who are reported to be taking shelter at the frontier province of China.
Disclosing that issue of Ulfa (I) chief taking shelter in China came up for discussion during a dialogue with his counterpart in Beijing on September 29, the Joint Intelligence Committee chairman R.N. Ravi told this newspaper that his Chinese counterpart suggested the idea of a Indian spotter to identify and apprehend the wanted insurgent leaders of Northeast using their territory for shelter.
Informing that India has shared information as to how Northeast insurgents are using Chinese arms and explosives and inflicting violence in northeastern states, Mr Ravi said that a mechanism would be worked out between the two countries soon in New Delhi for a real time intelligence sharing. The Ulfa (I) chief has been living in Tengchong on Sino-Myanmar border since he fled Bangladesh in 2009.
