Gorakhpur Tragedy: Dr Kafeel Khan held for kids death

This is the third arrest in the case related to deaths of children in Gorakhpur's BRD Medical College.

Lucknow: The UP Special Task Force (STF), on Saturday morning, arrested Dr Kafeel Khan from Gorakhpur in connection with the BRD Medical College tragedy that led to the deaths of scores of children.

Dr Khan was arrested when he was reportedly trying to flee to Nepal. This is the third arrest in the case related to deaths of children in Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College.

Dr Khan who was the nodal officer of the department of pediatrics in the BRD Medical College was removed from all hospital duties when over 30 children died, allegedly due to shortage of oxygen on August 10 and 11.

It was initially reported that Dr Khan had used his personal resources to bring oxygen from outside the hospital to save the children but it was later suggested that Dr Khan was involved in stealing of oxygen cylinders from the hospital for his private clinic.

It was also found that he was hand-in-glove with suspended BRD principal Dr Rajiv Misra. Earlier on Friday, a court in Gorakhpur had issued non-bailable warrants (NBW) against seven people including Dr Khan.

Investigating officer Abhishek Singh told reporters that additional sessions judge Shivanand Singh had issued the NBW against seven of the nine people named in the FIR who had not been arrested.
