Bengaluru: Demolition set to resume after Ganesh Chaturthi

Already, buildings on live drains are being marked for demolition in some zones.

Bengaluru: Having gone silent for nearly two weeks, the BBMP’s bulldozers are readying to roar again across the city after Ganesh Chaturthi. Already, buildings on live drains are being marked for demolition in some zones.

BBMP chief engineer, Solid Waste Management (SWM), Siddegowda said the revenue department had provided information on encroachments at 35 locations that were vulnerable to flooding and the buildings to be brought down were marked for demolition in Mahadevapura, Yelahanka and Dasarahalli on Friday. “The list has been submitted to BBMP Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad and work will be allotted to surveyors and officials to mark the encroachments in other areas too,” he said.

The BBMP, which has been accused of bulldozing only the houses of the poor and hapless and sparing the influential and big builders, claims the next phase of demolitions will be massive and no mercy will be shown to anyone, however, prominent they may be. “Structures on drains and lakes will be demolished mercilessly to arrest flooding in low-lying areas. We hope to shortly receive the survey report on actor Darshan's house as well,” Mr Siddegowda said, explaining that once the encroachments were cleared, the debris would be removed and the drains repaired to ensure that they were connected to others and there was free flow of water to prevent flooding in rain.
