Palakkad: 7 policemen suspended for cop’s suicide

The culprits must be arrested soon. Otherwise the evidence will be destroyed.

Palakkad: Seven policemen including two assistant sub inspectors attached to Kallekkad armed reserve police camp have been suspended in connection with the suicide of a young police officer from a tribal hamlet in Attappadi allegedly due to caste abuse.

Palakk- ad SP G. Siva Vikram said in a press conference here on Friday that a crime branch inquiry by a DySP would be conducted into the allegations of brutal mental and physical torture at the hands of senior police officers at the quarters meant for officers.

ASIs Rafique, Harigovind along with civil police officers Muhammed Azad, Mahesh, Sreejith, Jayesh, Vaisakh have been put under suspension.

Mr Siva Vikram said the officers were suspended for procedural lapses in allocation of housing quarters and forcefully removing Kumar's belongings from the quarters where he was assigned a room.

The dead body of the N K Kumar,30, a graduate in chemistry, was found lying near the railway track at Lakkidi Railway Station on July 25 and from near the track a suicide note was recovered a few days later along with his other belongs.

“The culprits must be arrested soon. Otherwise the evidence will be destroyed. A top officer at the camp was the one who led the policemen against my husband. He has named officers responsible for his death in the suicide note," Kumar’s wife Rajani and brother Rangan said.

They alleged that Kumar was often insulted by calling his caste name, given additional work and even asked to remove his clothes before the police officers who are culprits in the case.
