Study: 75 per cent middle-aged have poor muscle mass

Dietary protein helps to increase muscle protein synthesis and muscle protein deposition is favoured.

Chennai: More than 75 per cent of men and women in India have poor muscle mass due to inadequate intake of dietary proteins, reveals a survey conducted by Inbody, that analyses body composition for patients in hospitals in various Indian cities. The study reveals that men and women in the age group of 30-35 years need to gain more muscle mass.

The study analysed data from 1,243 people aged between 30-55 years from eight Indian cities including Chennai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Patna, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Ahmedabad stated that seven out of 10 middle-aged people in India have poor muscle mass.

As against the required levels, more than 68 per cent of Indians were found to have lower body protein content that causes poor muscle health. The percentage is even higher in working professionals and 72 percent of them had poor scores, while the percentage was 69 per cent in non-working professionals.

Medicos say that poor muscle mass can cause impaired muscle function, fatigue and poor metabolic health. Dietary protein helps to increase muscle protein synthesis and muscle protein deposition is favoured.

Healthy muscle mass builds stronger muscles that helps preserve and maintains healthy bone density. Therefore, doctors emphasize on high protein diet such that essential amino acids can be provided and protein synthesis is stimulated.
