VIT mission to increase greenery in Vellore

VIT has now tied up with Indian Bank with the objective planting 5,000 saplings this year in the city.

Chennai: As part of its mission to increase the green cover in the Vellore town, VIT University on Wednesday launched its new VIT Green Vellore Mission.

Vellore Collector S.A. Raman inaugurated the project at the Venkateswara Higher Secondary School. VIT has now tied up with Indian Bank with the objective planting 5,000 saplings this year in the city.“Varieties like Peltaforum and Raintree have chosen as they not only provide a huge cover of shade but also large quantities of oxygen. In the first phase, it has been pl-anned to plant 2,000 sa-plings this month alone,” VIT Chancellor G.Viswan-athan said.

The institution has alre-ady launched VIT Green Vellore to increase green cover of the city in 2008 and has been planting about 1,000 saplings every year . VIT vice-president GV.Selvam, Indian Bank deputy general manager Rajini Chandrashekar and Vellore MLA P.Karthikeyan also took part.
