Tamil Nadu: Plea against Valarmathi's detention

There was no compelling necessity to pass the order of detention. The detention per se is illegal and abuse of power, he added.

Chennai: The father of Valarmathi (23) a second year student of the Salem Periyar University has approached the Madras high court to quash an order of the commissioner of police, Salem, detaining her daughter under the Goondas Act.

A division bench comprising Justices A. Selvam and P. Kalaiyarasan before whom the habeas corpus petition filed by Madhaiyan, father of Valarmathi, came up for hearing adjourned it to August 3, after his counsel requested the court to adj-ourn the matter as her bail petition was pending.

Valarmathi, a second year M.A (journalism) student of Salem Periyar University, was arrested for allegedly distributing pamphlets during an agitation against the implementation of hydrocarbon project at Neduvasal and laying of ONGC pipe lines at Kadirmangalam.She was later detained under the Goondas Act.In his petition, Madhaiyan contended that the detention of her daughter,was malice in law. People have got right to assemble peacefully without arms.There was no compelling necessity to pass the order of detention. The detention per se is illegal and abuse of power, he added.
