Hyderabad: While the demand for Urdu literature is slowly decreasing, the younger generation is learning Urdu language at various schools. Several schools in the southern part of the city are offering Urdu as one of three languages at the school and college level.
“Parents are insisting that Urdu be taught at the school. Many managements are now offering it as one of the languages,” said Mohd Misbahuddin, director of Progress Group of Institutions located at Old City.
He added that the parents feel that as a lot of Islamic literature is in Urdu, they want their children to be familiar with the language. The demand, according to school managements, is increasing every year.
Ms Sarada Khan, principal of Narayana Concept School, Shahalibanda, said, “We have 1,400 students at the school and around 80 per cent students have opted for Urdu. The demand is increasing every year and we had hired more teachers to take classes.”
“Initially, we faced problems in getting Urdu teachers. But now we have some teachers who are proficient with the language. Urdu newspaper reading is also compulsory for the students,” said Mohammed Maqdoom Ali Khan, incharge of Orchard – The School, at Shastripuram.
