Chennai: Three of a family attempt suicide after death of woman

None of the sisters was married and the mother was depressed over it too, said an investigating official.

Chennai: A 60-year-old woman along with her son and a daughter attempted suicide by consuming poison at their residence in Kodungayur on Tuesday, depressed over the death of one of her daughters that morning.

Parimala, a resident of Srinivasa Street in Krishnamurthy Nagar, Kodungayur, lived with her three daughters and a son. Her husband had died a few years ago, police said, and the family survived on the son’s salary, police investigations revealed.

One of the sisters, Jayamala (35) was admitted to the Government Stanley Hospital with a heart problem. After a long battle, she died on Tuesday morning, police investigations revealed. The family was dejected over the death of Jayamala and had decided on a suicide pact. The eldest of the daughters, Maheshwari (37) had talked others out of the thought.

“None of the sisters was married and the mother was depressed over it too,” said an investigating official.

Around noon, Mahehwari left home to arrange for the funeral of her sister. When she returned home, she found the door locked from inside and no one turned up to open in spite of repeated knocks. Alarmed, Maheshwari with the help of neighbours broke open the door to find her mother, and her siblings, Manjula (33) and Prabhu (30) lying unconscious on the floor.

Kodungayur police rushed to the scene on information and moved the three of them to the Government Stanley hospital for treatment. “All three of them are in a very critical condition,” a doctor at the hospital told DC.
