Hyderabad: SRDP stuck over many hurdles

Work on the multi-grade separators at KBR Park, too, has come to a halt.

Hyderabad: The mammoth multicrore Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) for Hyderabad that includes 18 flyovers, two underpasses, major corridor development and road widening works has witnessed slow progress.

Work on the multi-grade separators at KBR Park, too, has come to a halt following the stay order from the National Green Tribunal.

Last year, the Telangana state government announced the SRDP, one of the GHMC’s costliest projects aimed at resolving traffic problems and providing hassle-free movement of vehicles. The first phase was to cost Rs 2,631 crore.

The Chief Minister set a deadline of three years for completion of the project. Except for underpasses at Owaisi Hospital and Mindspace, Madhapur, not much work has taken place on the other components.

The lack of proper preparatory work such as acquisition of properties and shifting of utilities has also affected the SRDP. About 320 properties need to be acquired for the project.

A senior officer from the GHMC’s engineering wing said the Hyderabad district administration had begun the exercise to acquire land from government entities and private property owners.

The administration hopes to complete acquisition of properties, including 3,177.90 square yards of the walkway of KBR Park near Maharaja Agrasen Junction, in the next few months.

The NGT, which heard the case pertaining to the proposal for cutting down trees at Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills to make way for the project, has directed the state government to maintain status quo around KBR park. The two companies whose bid has been approved by the GHMC for construction of 18 flyovers are studying traffic patterns at the junctions.
