Student's death at residential school sparks protest in Kadapa

Parents threaten to commit suicide over the incident

ANANTAPUR: The death of a Class VI boy student from a private residential school in Kadapa district raised many an eyebrow after his parents threatened to commit suicide over this incident.

The student, Suhaith, 11, died under suspicious circumstances with injuries on the body while the school staff informed the parents that he had complained of stomach ache on Saturday.

The parents were from Pulivendula, the home turf of chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, and the mother was serving as a volunteer there.

The parents said, “We paid the school and hostel fees of Rs 1.50 lakh to the Beeram Sridhar Reddy School in Kazipet mandal in Kadapa district but had to finally see our son’s body with injuries. We shall commit suicide if we do not get justice.” They sought a meeting with the chief minister during his next visit to Pulivendula.

Lalita, the volunteer and her husband Nagaraju, a software engineer, alleged that the teachers and staff beat up their son brutally, which led to his death a few days after he joined the private residential school.

“We rushed to school and took our son on a motorcycle to a hospital, where the doctors declared him as ‘brought dead’. Other students informed us that Suhaith collapsed with injuries on his body,” father Nagaraju said.

He appealed to the district administration to provide them an opportunity to represent the case to the chief minister on July 8, when he is expected in Pulivendula.

A group of parents does not want any disturbance over the issue and continuation of the classes, as they had already paid hefty fees to management. The parents, however, sought a detailed probe into the matter.

Another group accused these parents of supporting the school management to continue running the school. The issue took a sensitive turn after the deceased boy’s parents threatened to commit suicide in front of the school if the authorities do not take stringent action against the management.
