Hyderabad: LV Prasad Eye Institute has harvested 78,642 corneas from cadaver donors in the last 30 years and distributed 41,680 to needy patients. It has carried out 20,000 corneal transplants.

With focus on high quality and using technology, LVPEI has been able to ensure that the risk of a recipient getting bad quality eyes is reduced. LVPEI founder Dr Gullapalli N Rao said the institute had created a modern eye bank and specialised cornea care facilities, which were helping it preserve eyes and work towards alleviating blindness.

The cornea retrieval programme which has skilled counsellors has been able to carry out the programme in government and private hospitals. The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences has helped the institute get higher yields of donor tissues.
