Kochi: Abhimanyu memorial unveiled

Police arrests KSU activists demanding arrest of killer at Maharaja’s.

Kochi: CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan offered floral tribute at the memorial of slain SFI leader Abhimanyu opened at the Ernakulam Maharaja’s College on Tuesday amid controversy.

Hundreds of SFI activists gathered at the memorial of the undergraduate student who fell victim to campus violence a year back.

Early in the morning, Mr Balakrishnan laid the stone for the proposed two-storey study centre planned as a memorial for him at Kaloor.

SFI activists from all across the district participated in the march which started from Maharaja’s College at 11.30 am to High Court junction and back disrupting the traffic for almost an hour on the Shanmugham road.

Meanwhile, dramatic events happened in front of the main college gate when the police arrested KSU activists demanding the arrest of the killer instead of erecting the memorial.

The KSU activists claimed that they had reached the college gate for a day-long fast in protest. However, the police arrested and removed them from the spot.

The arrested include KSU district president Aloysius Xavier.

The event was a big controversy as the KSU alleged that SFI was trying to make this opportunity for their gain by creating a party martyr's memorial inside a government educational institution without the principal's permission. Two of the suspects, including Sahal, 21, who allegedly stabbed him in his chest, are still on the run.
