Hyderabad: Operator killed as crane crashes at Tolichowki

Counter weight from tilting equipment falls on the 45-year-old.

Hyderabad: A crane operator died while trying to escape when the massive equipment began titling at the site of the flyover construction at Tolichowki early on Tuesday.

Police said weights put on the crane for counter-balance fell on Guruprith Singh, 45, a Punjab native, when he jumped from the cabin to escape.

The girder that the crane was carrying fell to one side.

According to Golconda inspector K. Chandra- sekhar, Guruprith Singh was operating the crane by himself and lifting a girder in connection with the flyover construction works in Shaikpet. The vehicle suddenly began tilting to the right under the weight of the girder.

“The crane leaned towards the right side. Panicked by that, Guruprith jumped out of the cabin to save himself but the counter-weights put on the crane fell on him,” Mr Chandrasekhar said.

His colleagues saw the incident and called the police. By the time he was extricated from under the counter-weights and taken to Osmania General Hospital, he was declared brought dead.

The inspector said a case had been registered against the company, MVR Infra Projects Pvt Ltd, which is executing the flyover construction, under IPC Section 304 A (causing death due to negligence).

Hyderabad Mayor B. Rammohan announced an ex gratia of Rs 13 lakh to the kin of the deceased.
