Chennai: Two killed as van collides with truck in freak mishap
Chennai: Two persons were killed while 13 others sustained injuries in a road accident involving a truck and a van near Kalpakkam on East Coast Road under Koovathur police station limits in the early hours of Tuesday.
The incident occurred when the van carrying over a dozen employees from a private company in Kelambakkam collided head-on with a truck carrying chemicals, police said.
According to the police, at around 6: 30 am on Tuesday, the van was returning from the private company to drop the employees after a night shift on Chennai-Puduchery road, a truck loaded with chemical products heading towards Chennai from Puduchery collided head-on with the van.
In the impact of the collision, the van was completely destroyed.
On being informed, the Koovathur police rushed to the spot and rescued the people from the mangled van.
A 28-year-old man died on the spot and his body was sent to the Chengalpattu government hospital for an autopsy.
The driver of the trailer, however, managed to escape the scene following the incident.
One person identified as Balaji( 28) Suriyakuppam was killed on the spot while 14 seriously injured were rushed to the Chengalpattu government hospital for treatment, police said, adding, that one of the injured Iyanappan (20) of Kalkulam, Kalpakkam succumbed to injuries late on Tuesday morning.
The Koovathur police registered a case and launched a search for the driver. Furthur investigations are on.
