CCTV at Viyyur jail being put back to work

The state prisons department has already transferred Rs 1 crore to the Public Works Department\'s electrical wing for this.

THRISSUR: The authorities are refurbishing an entirely dysfunctional CCTV system at Viyyur Central Jail with new night vision cameras following the seizure of smartphones and contraband substances from prisoners in recent raids.

The state prisons department has already transferred Rs 1 crore to the Public Works Department's electrical wing for this.

"DGP (prisons) Rishiraj Singh has officially asked the PWD to complete the job within two weeks. At present none of the cameras is functioning due to lack of maintenance," jail superintendent Nirmalanandan Nair said.

Since the statewide flash raids ordered by Mr Singh on June 22 saw the seizure of four phones including a smartphone from killers of T. P. Chandrasekaran serving a life term, Kodi Suni and Mohammed Shafi, they had caught 16 phones from the inmates here till Tuesday.
