Yelahanka Lake! Tourist hub in making

The authorities are now finalising the design, though the date for opening the new facilities for the public has not been decided yet.

Bengaluru: Bengalureans can soon enjoy boat rides at Yelahanka Lake, which may also get a walking and cycling track. The authorities are now finalising the design, though the date for opening the new facilities for the public has not been decided yet.

The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC), which has taken up the project, told Deccan Chronicle, “The plan has been on the anvil for a long time. Now that the lake is being maintained well by authorities concerned, we are planning to introduce various activities. To begin with, we will introduce boat rides. The contract will be handed over to a private contractor to conduct boat rides.”

He said that the walking track was planned as it was observed that hundreds of people from surrounding areas went for their morning walks, but did not have a proper path. “Several residents living near the lake also requested us for the walking path. They asked if we can construct a cycle path. We have approved both the requests, and plans and designs are being made,” he said.

“Once the design is in place, we will meet the tourism minister and take further suggestions. The private company, which will be awarded the contract, will also be called for a meeting with KSTDC officials and rules and regulations on safety measures will be explained to them. More recreational activities will be added in the coming days. For now, we are working on boat rides and cycle and walking tracks. Once everything is done, we will decide on the date to throw the lake open for the public,” he said.

A senior official from KSTDC said that they will also discuss the ideas with the BBMP, Lake Development Authority, BWSSB and others to get their approval. “We will get all necessary permission before starting the projects. We will ensure that nothing is affected around the lake if we are allowed to construct cycle or walking paths,” he said.

Mr Anirudh Sampath, a resident of New Town Yelahanka, said, “ I go for a jog around the lake every morning and I find many others going for walks and jogs. A path will be helpful. By constructing the paths and introducing boat rides, we hope that the authorities will keep a check on the cleanliness of the lake. The people who visit the lake can also help by reporting any illegalities. The authorities can also create awareness among the public about the importance of the lake.”
