Hyderabad: The study 'Wings 2018: World of India's Girls', pointed out that the six states — Assam, Delhi-National Capital Region, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Telangana — performed worst on child sex ratio; incidence of crime against women; early marriage; spousal violence against women; and working women, the report said.
But the top brass in the state police force says the state has advanced initiatives to tackle crimes, especially against women. The number of cases being reported cannot be attributed to rise in crime but to police advising women not to hide and register complaints, says Shikha Goel, head of SHE Teams in the city.
“We don't know if the women (samples) who spoke were victims or is it a general perception. If the victims actually spoke, then the claim (study) can be considered,” the officer said.
The state has been proactive in all these area from the government and police end. Also, in large number of states these cases are not reported, but in the state the reported cases are high and it appears that the crime is high but the reason being the police spreading awareness to lodge complaints.
“For child marriage, there are separate committees to tackle and each police station has child protection officers who steps in to prevent child marriages.
“As far as crime against women, we have She teams and Barosa that has created a safe environment for women in the city. Hyderabad has been a pioneer in this area,” the head of the She Teams said.
“Telangana police is sensitive and pro active in taking up measures to see there is an environment of safety for women and children,” Ms Goel said.
