Living donor liver transplant at Nims

He was enrolled for a liver transplant but appropriate matches were not available.

Hyderabad: Nims doctors performed a living donor liver transplant for the first time, transplanting a part of a man’s liver to his 14-year-old son. Sashi Kiran had come in 2017 with gastro-intestinal bleeding, abdominal distension and jaundice and was found to have liver cirrhosis. He was enrolled for a liver transplant but appropriate matches were not available.

Dr N. Bheerappa, Nims head of the department of surgical gastroenterology and liver transplantation, said Kiran’s condition began deteriorating and it was decided to go for living donor transplant. Kiran’s father Uppaliah agreed to donate a part of his liver. The operation was successful and both of them are stable.
