Thoothukudi: A special district level committee has been constituted to remove acids and other chemicals kept in the storage at Sterlite copper.
The district level committee has been constituted based on the report of the high-power committee headed by two retired professors from Anna University and IIT-Madras, according to Thoothukudi district collector, Sandeep Nanduri.
He said that the State government has ordered the removal of phosphoric acid, LPG, diesel, Copper concentrate, liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen within 30 days from July 2. “The removal of gypsum stored in heaps inside the factory may take more time as its large in volume,” he added.
Mr. Nanduri said that the expenses for the removal process would be borne by the company administration, adding, the district level committee would not touch finished products.
Last week, around 2,000 tonnes of sulphuric acid from the copper smelter plant was removed following a reported leak.
