Telangana CM writes to Jaitley, seeks Rs 5,000-crore for Mission Kakatiya

In a letter to Union finance minister Arun Jaitely, Mr Rao urged the Centre to sanction the amount within three years.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday sought Rs 5,000 crore from the Centre for Mission Kakatiya, the project for restoration of lakes and water bodies in TS.

In a letter to Union finance minister Arun Jaitely, Mr Rao brought to his notice that NITI-Aayog had recommended Rs 5,000 crore for Mission Kakatiya and urged the Centre to sanction the amount within three years.

He asked the Centre for a Rs 30,000 crore special package for TS to implement Mission Bhagiratha and Mission Kakatiya aimed at providing a permanent solution vis-a-vis drought and drinking water woes in the state.

Mr Rao said that the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014 also promises extending financial assistance for development of backward regions in TS.

“Mission Bhagiratha and Mission Kakatiya schemes will go a long way in the development of backward regions in TS. These will help provide safe drinking water to every household and irrigation to all backward areas in the state. Both these schemes deserve a special package of Rs 30,571 crore. I have already submitted a representation to the Centre in this regard and I request you to expedite the approval process and release the funds,” the CM wrote.

He said the government needs about Rs 40,000 crore for Mission Bhagiratha and Rs 25,000 crore for restoration of over 45,000 lakes and it needs financial assistance from Centre to meet these goals.
