Reserve super speciality medical seats for TN students: Anbumani Ramadoss

CHENNAI: Asserting that super speciality medical seats in Tamil Nadu should not be given to candidates of other states, PMK youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday wanted a separate law in Tamil Nadu, similar to that in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to preserve domicile reservation in super specialty medical courses. Citing the Supreme Court verdict that applications from students of all the States should be considered for medical college admissions in Tamil Nadu, he said, “Already 15 per cent of MBBS seats and 50 per cent of seats in medical higher education are being provided to the national quota by Tamil Nadu”. “Since, there is no national quota for super speciality medical courses, the seats in such courses are being filled from Tamil Nadu students alone.

With 10 per cent of MBBS seats in the country remaining in Tamil Nadu, the number of medical seats in the state is the highest in the country. The same situation prevails in higher medical education too. The state government had set up medical colleges from the taxes given by people of the state and giving admission to students of other states, which contribute nothing is an injustice, he said.

“All institutes of higher education run by the Central government are set up with state's land allocation and funds, but no quota is given to Tamil Nadu students by such institutions. But, Tamil Nadu is being advised to share seats formed with its own revenue”. The Supreme Court itself had stated that a special law had been enacted in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to protect domicile reservation and refused to cancel the procedure in those states. So, Tamil Nadu should enact a similar law to protect the seats in specialised medical courses in the budget session of the Assembly, he said.
